[Incomplete Removals]

  I Grade Criteria
  Completion Deadlines for Undergraduates Only
  Extension of Time for Undergraduates
  Freeze I Petition
  I Lapses
  Incomplete Petition

I Grade Criteria

A grade of incomplete may be assigned by the instructor if the student's work in a course has been of passing quality but is incomplete due to circumstances beyond the student's control.

The regulations of the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate require the following procedures for all I grades assigned Fall Semester 1993 and later:

  1. Units for an I grade are not to be included in computing the student's grade point average
  2. For graduate students, the method of replacement of the I grade by a final grade will be determined by the Dean of the Graduate Division and the Graduate Council

    Completion Deadlines for Undergraduates only

All undergraduates must observe the following deadlines for replacement of an I grade.

I Grade ReceivedDeadline for replacement of I grade
Fall Semester First day of instruction of following Fall Semester
    Spring Semester
    Summer Session
First day of instruction of following Spring Semester

    Extension of Time for Undergraduates

If an undergraduate student is unable to finish a course on time, an extension of time may be requested from the Dean of the student's College or School prior to the lapse date (see above).

    Freeze I Petition

An undergraduate student may, within the above deadlines, notify in writing the Dean of the College or School in which the student is enrolled at that time that s/he will not attempt completion and request that the I grade not be replaced by an F or NP grade. This may be accomplished by filing the Petition to Retain an Incomplete Grade Permanently on the Record with the Dean. The Dean will forward this information to the Office of the Registrar and an F or NP will not replace the grade. This policy is limited to two courses, and the I grade will be retained permanently on the student's academic record.

Once a course is frozen, the student may never repeat the course nor may the grade be removed by taking an equivalent course.

    I Grade Lapses

Any I grade which has not been replaced by the deadline will be converted by the Office of the Registrar to the grade of F (or NP if the course was taken Passed/Not Passed). Thereafter, the F grade is included in computing the student's grade point average.

The lapse grade will be removed from the record if the course was completed prior to the deadline, but the paperwork reached the Office of the Registrar late.

    Filing the Incomplete Petition

A student must complete Section I of the Incomplete petition and pay the $5.00 (except Summer Session incompletes) fee before submitting the petition to the instructor, who then submits the petition to the Office of the Registrar. Please keep a copy of the petition for your records.
