Cancellation and Withdrawal Defined
Cancellation
If you do not wish to attend the University for a semester and instruction has not
yet begun, you must formally request a cancellation of your registration from the
University.
Withdrawal
If instruction has already begun and you find it necessary to discontinue
attending classes, you must formally request a withdrawal from the University.
Whether you cancel or withdraw, any classes in which you are enrolled will be dropped
from your schedule, and you will no longer be eligible to attend for that semester or
any future semester until you are readmitted. (See below)
Notice to New Undergraduates
If you are a new undergraduate student and wish to return to Berkeley in a future semester, it may be
beneficial for you to wait until the beginning of instruction and withdraw instead of cancel. If you cancel
your registration, you will be required to submit a new admission application to attend a future semester;
if you withdraw, you only need to apply for readmission, which is a much simpler procedure. Note that you
need to be officially registered (enrolled in at least one class, registration fees paid, and no blocks)
in order to withdraw.
Notice to International Students
If you are an international student in F or J immigrant status, it is essential that you consult with the
Berkeley International Office, 2299 Piedmont Avenue, to ascertain whether or not withdrawing
will jeopardize your immigration status and your permission to be in the United States.
Cancellation
You can cancel your registration via Tele-BEARS or by notifying the Office of the
Registrar in writing prior to the first day of instruction for the semester. You can also go to your
college or school dean's office (undergraduates), to your major department
(graduate students), or the Office of the Registrar at 120 Sproul Hall, to have your cancellation processed
electronically.
Withdrawal
You must have your withdrawal approved and processed by an adviser at your college or school dean's office
(undergraduates) or by your major adviser (graduate students). Your withdrawal will be processed electronically;
you do not need to go to the Office of the Registrar to file a petition. If you are withdrawing for medical
reasons, you should also contact the University Health Service at the Tang Center, 2222 Bancroft Way. If you
are an international student (on an F-1 or J-1 visa), you should also consult with an adviser at the Berkeley
International Office, 2299 Piedmont Avenue. If you have a student loan, you are required to go to Billing and
Payment Services, 140 University Hall, for an exit interview.
Fee and Financial Aid Adjustments for Withdrawals
All fee adjustments for withdrawals are applied to students' CARS accounts and may be applied to any
outstanding debts. Late fees are not refundable. Students who withdraw and who are participating
in the Deferred Payment Plan are likely to have a remaining financial obligation to the University.
Return of financial aid funds to aid programs complies with the Federal Higher Education Act of 1965
as currently reauthorized. The amount of financial aid to be returned is based upon the number of days
in the term the student was not enrolled, divided by the total number of days in the term. This is
determined by the last day you attend classes. The percentage derived from this is applied to the
amount of aid the student was awarded and the result is returned to aid programs with some adjustment.
IF YOU WITHDRAW, IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU UPDATE YOUR ADDRESS(ES) WITH THE OFFICE OF THE REGISTRAR
to be able to receive all notices of fee and financial aid adjustments. Any financial aid adjustments
will be billed to your CARS account.
For more information and a sample calculation, see
http://www.uga.berkeley.edu/fao/withdrawal.htm
or contact the Financial Aid Office, second floor, Sproul Hall, 510-642-6442 (undergraduates) or
510-642-0485 (Graduate and Professional School Students).
Note: You will be held responsible for all Housing and Dining charges prior to the first day of classes
and after your effective date of withdrawal, if you are still in student housing. These charges will not
be part of financial aid eligibility, nor will they be subject to refund. Financial aid will not be
provided to cover any of these charges.
Returning to Berkeley
If you plan to enroll for a future term, you must file an application for readmission by the following
deadlines:
Fall Semester: June 1
Spring Semester: November 1
Readmission applications are available at your college or school dean's office; at the Office of
Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools, 110 Sproul Hall (undergraduate students); and at the
Graduate Division, 302 Sproul Hall (graduate students). Please note that readmission is subject to departmental
and/or college/school approval and is not guaranteed.
Registration Fee Adjustments
The amount of registration fees that you may be responsible for at the time of your withdrawal or
cancellation is prorated according to the effective date of your withdrawal or cancellation,
according to the tables below. Please note that the health insurance and Class Pass fees
are nonrefundable and therefore remain assessed at 100% for all withdrawals, regardless of the
effective date.
