Changing Grades
Review & Edit Grades Before Submission
To go back and review or correct your grades before you submit them, log into eGrades, select GRADES IN PROGRESS for the class you would like to review and press GO. Click on Change Grade button next to each student to correct each manually.
If you used an Excel spreadsheet to upload the grades, you can repeat this but this action will replace all grades, not just the grade you would like to change.
What if I Need to Change a Grade After I've Submitted Them?
As is stated in the University of California Academic Senate Regulations, "All grades except Incomplete are final when filed by the instructor of record in an end-of-term course report. However, the correction of a clerical or procedural error may be authorized as the Division directs. No change of grade may be made on the basis of reassessment of the quality of a student's work. No term grade except Incomplete may be revised by re-examination."
If you have submitted a grade via eGrades, and determine that you had made a clerical or procedural error, you can correct it either by email or a memo. You must provide the
- Course control number
- Department & course number
- Term
- Name of the student
- Student ID #
- Nature of the clerical or procedural error, e.g. computational error
- Corrected grade
If you have any questions, please call 510.642.0179 (Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.)
To make a correction, you must
- Write a memo on department letterhead, submit the "Petition for Grade Change" form, or email egrades@berkeley.edu
- give a clear description for the grade change. A simple statement that the clerical or procedural error has occurred is insufficient. Errors resulting from student negligence or error, such as those arising from the misreading of examination instructions, are not included under routine approval.
- When writing a memo, only the signature of the instructor of record or department chair is allowed. Department staff cannot sign in lieu of the instructor.
- Check with your department for any other instructions before submitting.
