What is the Statement of Legal Residence?

The completion of the Statement of Legal Residence (SLR) is mandatory for all new students. This form is used to determine the fees that you will be assessed. If you do not complete the SLR by your priority deadline as stated on the online SLR Welcome Page, you will be assessed fees as a nonresident on your billing statement.

How long will it take?

If you claim to be a California resident for tuition purposes, the average time for completing the SLR is less than 20 minutes, although it can take longer if the system asks for additional information. If you do not claim to be a California resident, you should be able to complete the form in less than 5 minutes. New students who do NOT submit an SLR by the stated deadline will be assessed nonresident fees.

When is it due?

Your SLR deadline will be posted at the top of the SLR Welcome Page once you log in. Submit your SLR before the deadline to ensure that your registration fees are assessed properly.

How do I complete the Online SLR?

• You will need your CalNet ID to log on to Bear Facts, where you can submit your Statement of Legal Residence. If you have not created your CalNet ID, go to Create CalNet ID.
• Once you have your CalNet ID and passphrase, go to Bear Facts. After you logon to Bear Facts with your CalNet ID, click on the SLR tab on the menu bar at the upper left hand corner of the page. You can now start filling out the online SLR.
• You may need information from your parents to complete this form.
• You do not have to complete the entire form in one sitting. You can save and change responses as long as you have not "submitted" your SLR.

What happens after I complete my SLR?

The Residence Affairs Unit will review your SLR. You may be contacted if additional documentation is needed. After your residency status has been determined, you should be able to view your residency status via Bear Facts, usually within a few weeks after you submit the SLR.
