Cancellation / Withdrawal & Readmission
If you are enrolled in classes and/or paid fees, and you do not plan on attending that term, you must take action by doing one of the following (otherwise, you will be billed for that semester's fees and/or receive failing grades):
Cancelling Registration before instruction for the applicable term begins
Withdrawing from a semester in progress

Continuing Students: Cancelling Registration Before Instruction Begins
If you do not wish to attend the University for a semester and instruction has not yet begun, you must formally request a cancellation of your registration from the University. When you cancel, any classes in which you are enrolled will be dropped from your schedule and you will not be able to attend any future semester until you are readmitted. (See below.)
You can cancel your registration
via Tele-BEARS or
notify the Office of the Registrar in writing prior to the first day of instruction for the semester by opening a case with Cal Student Central. Alternatively, you may mail your request to Office of the Registrar, 120 Sproul Hall, Berkeley, CA 94720-5404.
you may also visit your college or school dean's office (undergraduates) or your major department (graduate students) to have your cancellation processed.
You will receive a 100% refund of all fees paid, minus a $10 cancellation fee.
There will be no notation of the cancellation on your transcript.
Withdrawing from a Semester in Progress
Once instruction for the semester has begun, you cannot cancel your registration. You must withdraw.
When you withdraw, any classes in which you are enrolled will be dropped from your schedule, and you will no longer be eligible to attend for that semester or any future semester until you are readmitted. (See below)
You must withdraw through your college or school dean's office (undergraduates) or through your major adviser (graduate students). The withdrawal will be processed electronically; you do not need to go to the Office of the Registrar to file a petition.
If you are withdrawing for medical reasons, you should also contact the University Health Service at the Tang Center, 2222 Bancroft Way.
If you are an international student (on an F-1 or J-1 visa), you should also consult with an adviser at the Berkeley International Office, 2299 Piedmont Avenue.
If you have a student loan, you are required to complete an exit interview. Visit http://studentbilling.berkeley.edu/exitDirect.htm to complete this requirement.
If you are a student athlete, you should discuss your plan with your coach and also with your advisor in the Athletic Study Center.

Your refund, if any, will depend on when you withdraw. (Please see refund table below.) The Health Insurance, Class Pass, and Document Management fees are nonrefundable, and will not be refunded regardless of your withdrawal date.
Your transcript will not reflect any course work, but will indicate a withdrawal for the applicable term.
Notice to Admitted Undergraduates
If you wish to cancel or withdraw, please contact your college before canceling or withdrawing. If you cancel your registration, you will be required to submit a new admission application to attend a future semester.
Notice to International Students
If you are an international student in F or J immigrant status, it is essential that you consult with the Berkeley International Office, 2299 Piedmont Avenue, to ascertain whether or not withdrawing will jeopardize your immigration status and your permission to be in the United States.
Fee and Financial Aid Adjustments for Withdrawals
Fee adjustments, if any, are based on your withdrawal date. All fee adjustments for withdrawals are applied to your CARS accounts and may be applied to any outstanding debts. Late fees, Health Insurance fee, Class Pass fee and Document Management fee are not refundable. If you are participating in the Deferred Payment Plan and have not paid all your fees, you may still owe fees to the University.
If you are a financial aid recipient and withdraw, you may have to pay back all or part of your financial aid as you may no longer be eligible for the full amount of aid. Please consult with the Financial Aid and Scholarship office at firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you withdraw, it is imperative that you update your address(es) on Bear Facts so that you will receive all notices of fee and financial aid adjustments.
Note: You will be held responsible for all Housing and Dining charges prior to the first day of classes and after your effective date of withdrawal, if you are still in student housing. These charges will not be part of financial aid eligibility, nor will they be subject to refund. Financial aid will not be provided to cover any of these charges.
Readmission After an Absence
If you plan to enroll for a future term, you must file an application for readmission by the following deadlines:
Readmission information and application for undergraduates are available here; at your college or school dean's office; and at the Graduate Division, 318 Sproul Hall (graduate students). Please note that readmission is subject to departmental and/or college/school approval and is not guaranteed.
Refunds - Impact of Withdrawal or Cancellation on Fees
The amount of registration fees that you may be responsible for at the time of your withdrawal or cancellation is prorated according to the effective date of your withdrawal or cancellation, according to the tables below. Please note that the Health Insurance, Class Pass, and Document Management fees are nonrefundable and therefore remain assessed at 100% for all withdrawals, regardless of the effective date.
